Enjoying the Symi Summer Sunshine

It is a hot and busy day on Symi. The Pentecost long weekend means a mass exodus from Athens as thousands of Greeks head for the islands and Symi, like many other Aegean islands, is buzzing.

Symi Visitor Accommodation is also busy in its own right in that we have a group of sixty Americans and South Africans here for a wedding which will be taking place on the little island at Agia Marina this afternoon. Wendy is out there, supervising the arrangements at the moment. Yesterday the same group celebrated a milestone birthday party at the beach at Agia Marina. Meanwhile our usual Danish friends are at the Hotel Fiona and lots of Symi’s regular June visitors are happily enjoying the summer sunshine.

Football madness has also taken over and even the day trippers on the ferries are waving flags and singing football songs. There is a troupe doing just that on the gangplank of the Symi below our office window!

The world’s largest ‘yacht’, The World, is expected to visit Symi in the course of the weekend. She is steaming out of Marmaris right now according to the http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/default.aspx

Monday is a bank holiday in Greece but the Symi Visitor office will open as usual as are most tourist based businesses.

Have a good weekend.

Regards,
Adriana

About this Blog

I sailed into Panormitis Bay, Symi, by chance one windy July day in 1993 and have been here ever since. The locals tell me that this is one of the miracles of St Michael of Panormitis. A BA graduate with majors in English, Philosophy and Classical Civilisation, the idea of living in what is to all intents and purposes an archaeological site appeals to me. Not as small as Kastellorizo, not as touristy as Rhodes, Symi is just the right size. I live on a small holding which my husband and I have reclaimed from a ruin of over-grazing and neglect and turned into a small oasis over the course of the past 22 years. I also work part-time for Symi Visitor Accommodation, helping independent travellers discover and enjoy Symi's simple pleasures for themselves.
